Listening to Ladies and Vent Nouveau Call for Scores from Women Composers

Listening to Ladies and Vent Nouveau are excited to announce a call for scores.
Submissions must be received by January 15th, 2017.
Composers who identify as women and are of any age or nationality are invited to submit scores for previously unperformed music for a recital during Women’s History Month (March; venue TBA). The pieces will be performed by an all-woman ensemble of musicians drawn from the Vent Nouveau collective, and will be included on a program alongside other contemporary works by women.
Pieces should be no longer than 10 minutes long, with no minimum length. They may include all, or a subset, of the following instrumentation:
2 Flutes
2 Oboes
2 Clarinets
1 Bassoon
1 Saxophone (Alto or Soprano preferred)
1 Horn
1 Trombone
1 Piano
1 Soprano
Electronics
There is no fee to submit. You may submit up to two works.
IMPORTANT: Please ensure that no identifying information is on either the score or in the filenames.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Please email the following items to listeningtoladies@gmail.com by midnight EST, Sunday January 15th, 2017:
1) PDF score(s) of the piece(s) (maximum is 2 pieces). Program notes are not required, but if they are included with the score, please remove all personal/identifying information that may appear in them.
2) MP3 sound files for each piece submitted (MIDI is fine)
3) A separate PDF containing: the title(s) of the piece(s), the name of the composer, and contact information for the composer – email, phone number, and website address if available. You may also include a brief bio (no more than 150 words) on this document but it will not be read by those selecting the scores until after they have made their selections.
Again, remember to ensure that no identifying information is on the score or in the filenames of the PDF or the mp3. Your name should only appear on the separate PDF with your contact information and the names of your works.
The number of compositions selected for inclusion is dependent on the pool of works received.
The compositions will be selected by the Vent Nouveau performers with administrative help from Listening to Ladies staff. Selected composers will be notified by email by Friday January 27th, 2017. Selected composers must be prepared to supply parts and other performance materials for their selected compositions by Friday February 10th, 2017 in order to allow the performers enough time to rehearse them.
The concert will be recorded and recordings made available to the composers for their use.

Music Secrets: How to Write an Opera, Part 1

Feel like writing an opera is only for big name composers with big budgets? Or are you willing to take the plunge and create a work in one of the most compelling and cutting edge musical forms...an opera? Almost two years ago I embarked on the largest musical production I have created to date -  Libertaria: The Virtual Opera. After writing the award-winning Creation Oratorio and dozens of multimedia works, I wanted to combine my love of the audio and the visual into a single large scale work.  Find a Great Dramatic Story You need a strong story to write a compelling opera. Fortunately you can easily borrow from thousands of public domain works and modernize them. Think of West Side Story (just a contemporary version of Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet) .   Many great operas use Shakespeare, the Brothers Grimm , and Biblical stories, all of which include interesting characters, strong themes, and action.   Libertaria borrows heavily from messianic sto...
