Using Technology to Create the Virtual Opera Libertaria

Using Technology to Create the Virtual Opera Libertaria Creating a full‐length opera in the 21 st century requires a composer’s ingenuity and ability to think outside the box and into cyberspace. What do crowdsourcing, machinima, virtual auditions, social networking, and a libretto have in common? Each is a key element in the production of Libertaria: The Virtual Opera , a feature‐ length sci‐fi animated opera created through online collaboration and cutting edge technology. For those who live outside the 21 st century digital world, terms like crowdsourcing, virtual, and machinima may seem like a foreign language out of a Ray Bradbury sci‐fi novel. Crowdsourcing involves assigning tasks for your project to the public at‐large. More than simply outsourced, a project that is crowdsourced can involve dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people contributing a small part to the creative whole. Typically one person acts as the “brain” of the project, co...

Living Machinima: Nano Ensemble 21

Test Composite with Comic Book Makeup and Machinima Living Machinima: Nano Ensemble 21 So those that have been keeping up with my crazy projects have noticed that I am really into animation and machinima (an animation style based on video games ). What you might have not  known about me is that I also studied film and video, and spent a summer doing special Fx makeup for really terrible movies, ok, one wasn't terrible, but the rest....well, just lots of zombies on set...lots. First time trying comic book makeup. For an upcoming festival I decided that I wanted to create a virtual ensemble using the usual machinima software Moviestorm , but this time I wanted to actually be a living, breathing part of the concert. How to do this? Well, I used the grant that I received to purchase a full Green Screen and lighting kit. Yes, right now my entire dining room is taken up with a massive green screen, a lights, umbrellas, and recording equipment. (Yes, I work in the dining...

PRESS RELEASE: Experimental Composer Produces Opera vis Internet

Libertaria: The Virtual Opera PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release Experimental composer Sabrina Peña Young wanted to create an opera - without leaving her apartment! So she rounded up an international cast and crew using crowdsourcing, Music Xray, and social networks to create a cutting edge, and slightly psychotic, animated opera. "I wanted to create an opera that didn't require a concert hall, an opera that would reach out to a digital generation through social networking and online media. And to be honest, I wanted to create a nutty sci-fi opera about a renegade girl who defeats evil geneticists. I'm a nerd at heart. "  After two years in production, Libertaria: The Virtual Opera will wrap up summer of 2013. The dedicated opera cast has never met in person for rehearsals and contacts Young entirely through e-mail and Skype. The small animation team uses machinima, an animation style popularized by gamer fan videos.  Libertaria: The Virtual Opera will ...

Film Music, Audiomine, Opera, and More Music

This summer has been busy with music and traveling fun. Check out updates on this summer's music projects: MONICA by Rob Cabrera Rob Cabrera's animated short Monica is set for release in 2013. Already an award-winner, Monica promises to be an exciting adventure for kids and grown-ups alike! Creating the fun and quirky cartoon sci-fi inspired score was a fun challenge. Taking inspiration from sources as varied as Marvel movie scores, Japanese pop, and Bernard Hermann, I enjoyed creating a memorable electronic score. Even my daughter had a chance to take part when I dubbed her high-pitched "Monica" over the title screen. Keep an eye out for Monica . AMERICANA by Sean Fleck Imagine having an eagle's eye view of America with incredible timelapse footage. Clouds roll away, the desert beckons, the lights of the city become dizzying...all this and more is what you will experience with Sean Fleck's work Americana , now available online.
