MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and allows different synthesizers to "speak" to each other. Before MIDI musicians were limited significantly in performance because their equipment could not process signals from different manufacturers. I remember sending off short stories to several professional publications (and I still have the rejection letters somewhere).
