This event will be held at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts from 4:00-7:30PM on Monday, August 5th. We'll be in the Film Room on the 3rd Floor - the front desk will direct you. No experience editing Wikipedia is required but please bring a laptop! Buffalo Girl Choir Fundraiser this Week! Support Vocal Education for Urban Girls  SUPPORT AND DONATE TODAY Buffalo Girlchoir almost never happened. Throughout 2013-2015, I was searching for a way to create a youth choral ensemble. I sought advise from colleagues involved in music education who were discouraging at best, telling me that there was simply no need for another such ensemble. I knew I could make it happen but I was struggling with ideas about how this new ensemble would be unique when I received a letter from a student. Among the many inspirational things she wrote, one phrase stood out and changed everything. She wrote: “singing in an all female, women-led ensemble was empowering” and changed the way she thought about herself and her abilities. It was my light bulb moment. We have a new  website , some new awards and are excited about our future! We’re holding our annual election to engage additional members to help us grow IAWM and advocate for women in music! Concert features program of music by women composers  Someday, perhaps, there won’t be a need to advocate and provide a platform for the work of women composers. Until that time, Women in Music Columbus, as it has done for almost 140 years, is on the case. The local organization also advocates for women performers, offering multiple opportunities each season for its performing members to participate in recitals and concerts. These concerts often include the music of women composers. Additionally, every other year WMC puts out a call for submissions from women composers, with all selected works to be performed in one program. The Women Composers program will be held on Sunday, April 15, in Capital University’s Huntington Recital Hall. “It’s part of our mission statement to promote women making music and women composers,” WMC President Cynthia Mahaney said, “and certainly providing performing opportunities is a big reason why many of our members join.” ... Listening to Ladies and Vent Nouveau are excited to announce a call for scores. Submissions must be received by January 15th, 2017. Composers who identify as women and are of any age or nationality are invited to submit scores for previously unperformed music for a recital during Women’s History Month (March; venue TBA ). The pieces will be performed by an all-woman ensemble of musicians drawn from the Vent Nouveau collective, and will be included on a program alongside other contemporary works by women. Pieces should be no longer than 10 minutes long, with no minimum length. They may include all, or a subset, of the following instrumentation: 2 Flutes 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets 1 Bassoon 1 Saxophone (Alto or Soprano preferred) 1 Horn 1 Trombone 1 Piano 1 Soprano Electronics There is no fee to submit. When a Classical Composer Gets Pregnant Many times we often think of classical composers as these dead European guys with fancy powdered white wigs and an impeccable taste for the royal ladies at court. Even our modern day perception of the classical composer may conjure up images of film composer John Williams or minimalist composer Philip Glass . But believe it or not, throughout the globe there is another gender that enjoys spending countless sleepless nights slaving over harmonies and melodies, symphonies and operas. Yes, I mean women.
