Buffalo Girl Choir Fundraiser this Week! Support Vocal Education for Urban Girls

Buffalo Girl Choir Fundraiser this Week! Support Vocal Education for Urban Girls  SUPPORT AND DONATE TODAY Buffalo Girlchoir almost never happened. Throughout 2013-2015, I was searching for a way to create a youth choral ensemble. I sought advise from colleagues involved in music education who were discouraging at best, telling me that there was simply no need for another such ensemble. I knew I could make it happen but I was struggling with ideas about how this new ensemble would be unique when I received a letter from a student. Among the many inspirational things she wrote, one phrase stood out and changed everything. She wrote: “singing in an all female, women-led ensemble was empowering” and changed the way she thought about herself and her abilities. It was my light bulb moment. I didn’t want to start a children’s choir, I wanted to create a GIRLchoir. Our first rehearsal opened with 9 singers, by our first concert, we had 14 and by the end of the first year, 24.

Fortunately you can easily borrow from thousands of public domain works and modernize them. Think of West Side Story (just a contemporary version of Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet). Think of it as a screenplay or script, but for music. If you are not a writer, like I happen to be, then I highly recommend that you pair up with a poet or seasoned librettist. This partnership will ensure that your opera combines the best talents of both artists. The last thing you want to hear is that the music was great but that the story, well, st

But how can we find the time to create? Here are some amazing songwriting tips!  1. Find a Quiet Space Seriously, avoid trying to work in your home with the kids and the chores and the television all begging for your time. Instead, find a quiet place in your home or at a coffee shop to write music . 2. Try Something NEW Always writing the same old ballads or songs? Then try something new. Challenge yourself to try a new style of music.  3. Learn Music Theory You don't have to be a composer music theory guru to enjoy writing music. But songwriters DO benefit from learning music theory, harmony, rhythm, and how to read music. If you don't know where to look, try some simple exercises from books like Songwriting 101 .  4. Borrow from other Tunes. Really, it's that simple. You can borrow m
