"The Oklahoma Composers Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting new music in Oklahoma, presents its third annual Future of Music Symposium this July. The free, day long event will take place on Saturday, July 7, 2012, 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sonder Music, Dance & Art (225 E Gray St, Norman, OK). The annual symposium focuses attention on how technology, globalization and the economy are influencing the way music is created, distributed, valued and experienced. Kerry Folsom, a doctoral candidate in music composition at the University of Oklahoma, spearheaded the idea for the symposium in 2010. “The purpose of the event is to create an open discussion for composers and musicians about the future,” Kerry says. “A lot is changing in the world of music and we want to bring that into focus.”

"This year’s symposium includes a welcome reception, three presentations, a round table discussion, and a concert. Dr. Konstantinos Karathanasis, a faculty member in Composition at the University of Oklahoma, will present about the future of electroacoustic music. Sabrina Peña Young, a self-described “Intermedia composer, percussionist, and obsessive sci-fi buff,” will discuss how technology is affecting modern composition. Folsom is also presenting this year for the first time. He plans to focus on Native American music tradition in the new millennium. All three presenters will have works performed on the concert, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
The complete symposium schedule can be found online at www.oklahomacomposers.org."

Fortunately you can easily borrow from thousands of public domain works and modernize them. Think of West Side Story (just a contemporary version of Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet) .   Many great operas use Shakespeare, the Brothers Grimm , and Biblical stories, all of which include interesting characters, strong themes, and action.   Libertaria borrows heavily from messianic sto...

Electronica work Las Aguas from the prizewinning multimedia Creation Oratorio by Sabrina Peña Young. Originally commissioned by the Millikin University Womens Choir and Percussion Ensemble. Program notes and Translation: Las Aguas Cielos Sky/Heavens Separe las aguas de las aguas Separate the waters from the waters Aire Air La vida Life (Swahili) Maisha Life Bahari Sea/Ocean Hewa Air Iwepo nafasi kati ya maji igawe maji na maji. Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. Kuwepo na viumbe hai tele kwenye maji, ndege waruke juu ya dunia katika nafasi ya anga Let the waters swarm with living creatures; let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.
