Buffalo Composer Finalist in CINTAS Foundation Composer Fellowship for 2018-2019  in Miami Miami, August 2018 – The CINTAS Foundation announces this year’s finalists for the annual CINTAS Fellowship Competition and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. A reception and awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 10th, at the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum. An exhibition featuring works by each of the finalists will be on exhibit at the Lowe Art Museum beginning on Wednesday, October 3rd. Buffalo Composer Sabrina Peña Young is among the finalists for this year's Cintas composer fellowship. If she wins, Young hopes to use the funds to produce her upcoming children's opera Alica and the White Rabbit , a futuristic opera loosely inspired by the work of Lewis Carroll and a precursor to her animated opera Libertaria. Songwriting 101 Workshop in Buffalo New York Learn basic songwriting techniques like writing lyrics, rhythm, and harmony. Students will work on developing individual songs while working on fun and challenging music songwriting exercises that will develop music writing skills. Students will learn how to defeat writer's block and where to find inspiration when writing music. Students are urged to perform songs in class for encouragement and constructive feedback. Rhythm is treated very differently in classical music from the sharp precision that other musics might require - it's organic and fluid. Recognizing this difference and being sensitive to the nature of rhythm itself in different contexts is important if you're trying to bridge gaps between different styles of musicianship. I recognize also that I come off as pompous and harsh sometimes with my critiques of - the musicians who played on inside//outside's record were absolutely phenomenal and had to learn and record the music in a very short amount of time. What they did was, quite frankly, incredible, and of the highest professional standard.
