After nearly three years from conception to realization, two years of music production, one thousand vocal takes, and zero sleep for an entire summer of animation and post production, Libertaria: The Virtual Opera is finished! Yes, FINISHED! The crazy idea of mixing an opera with a film, two nearly impossible feats, while juggling family life, work, and teaching, not to mention things like eating and sleeping, was one that challenged me on a musical and mental level.
Libertaria challenged my family, who had to sacrifice time so I could stay up endless nights and work on weekends to finish the work, it challenged our amazing cast and crew who volunteered their time and talents for a crazy production. And I have to thank my husband Coach Nate Young for supporting me throughout this summer and Dr. Clare Shore who has always been a mentor and amazing friend for supporting me musically and was my moral support through the process on those days that I didn't think that being a composer and a teacher and a mother at the same time was remotely possible. I'd e-mail her a note on FB or gmail, and she'd quickly write back with good advice. That was invaluable.
Libertaria: The Virtual Opera is an opera of it's own kind. It's one of only a handful of machinima operas, and the world's first original feature-length machinima opera.
So what's next for Libertaria?
On October 5th the machinima opera will premier in Lake Worth, Florida as part of the Classical Concerts at Calvary series. There are also premieres planned in New York and possibly abroad. The film is being entered into film festivals. I am planning on spending the next year promoting the opera. The goal is to have 100 screenings of the opera in the first two years, and possibly a screening in Second Life.
If you or your organization is interested in screening Libertaria, I have a shortlist of people and venues that will participate in the Libertaria Virtual Launch Party. This is a year long event where folks receive a complimentary DVD screener packet of Libertaria and screen the film publicly at a venue, university, film club, coffee shop, etc.
Contact me at spenayoung@gmail.com if you are interested in screening Libertaria.
Priority is given to venues, film clubs, arts organizations, university student groups, and educational institutions, although private individuals can apply. More information HERE. Libertaria is not rated, but I would recommend high school and up due to sci-fi violence and substance abuse (of a fictional substance called Metal Ink). If you have questions about the screening the opera or would like to conduct an interview please feel free to contact me.
